Email #9: Window of opportunity closed

Posted in 20 dates, dating, me, online dating at 9:19 am by N

For all the no-reply emails I sent out, I have gotten a few unsolicited emails. This one was particularly nice:

Date: February 8
Subject: All the best bands have mandolins..

I also have a soft spot for groups that have fiddles/violins and accordians in the line up as well. That said my tastes tend to run to folk rock and alt country so I may be biased :)

The Greek Theatre in Berkeley is probably the biggest venue I’d head to for a show (seen Wilco there twice – nothing like hearing “California Stars” on one of those rare warm and clear Bay Area nights at the Greek), but I must admit I was tempted by the Boss – I love good lyrics and he has one of my favourite (if depressing) lines “Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true, or is it something worse?”

I’m a big fan of scrabble (or really a lot of other games) over beers or wine. I’d happily meet you for a game any time, should you be so inclined.

Cheers

He’s 41 (a tad oldish, but really, only six years older than me), Australian (hence the “favourite”), and sounded like a nice, well-grounded guy. I wrote back.

Thanks for the nice note! As soon as I read that you saw Wilco at the Greek, I thought, “Wow. Imagine hearing ‘California Stars’ there.” Then just a few words later… I love the Greek. I’m not a big fan of huge shows, but Bruce was awesome. That was the first time I’d ever seen him, and I just couldn’t believe how he carried that bar band vibe through in a stadium show.

So who are your favorite Australian bands? (The Waifs immediately came to mind with your folk-rock and alt-country tastes.) Or maybe I could just ask you that over a beer and Scrabble.

Hope you’re having a good week.

We exchanged a few more emails, mostly about music. He was out of town for work, I was busy, he suggested a day to meet up, I forgot to write back. Then after I sent an email apologizing for not writing back, he wrote:

I hate to do this but can I ask for a rain check? I’m not much for multi dating and have met someone with whom I’d like to see where it goes before I actively pursue meeting anyone else.

My apologies for this, I was genuinely looking forward to meeting you.

I have to respect him for that. I wrote back and said I understood and wished him luck. After all, that’s why we’re all on Match, right?

Email #8: Hoagies are not enough of a hook

Posted in 20 dates, dating, me, online dating at 6:57 pm by N

I emailed this guy because I hadn’t emailed anyone in a while, and he was from right outside of Philly (I am from right outside of Philly). He also made a funny joke in the “Last Thing I Read” section: Still hoping I can find that special somone to teach me to read ;).

I sent him a totally lame email:

Hi!

I have found one place that makes something approaching an Italian hoagie: Molinari’s in North Beach. But of course, it’s not a hoagie without the Amoroso roll (and sadly, they don’t have them).

If you ever want to talk about the Shore or try to track down some decent pizza, give me a shout.

Nada.

Email #7: I guessed wrong

Posted in 20 dates, dating, me, online dating at 6:46 pm by N

This guy mentioned that he was Buddhist (I’m not, but I think Buddhism is fascinating), had a long list of favorite songs (about half of which I loved), and described himself as “rebelliously intellectual.” He also included this quote and offered to buy a drink for anyone who could guess whose it was:

“A human being is a part of a whole, called by us ‘universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest… a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Now that I think about it, what’s up with starting the games before you even meet a girl? Kidding, of course. You need to have some sort of a gimmick on Match to rise above the masses. Here’s what I wrote:

Hi!

I was going to guess at the quote, but then I cheated and Googled it. Albert Einstein, eh? I would have been hopelessly wrong. It’s always amazing to me when scientists (or any other left-brain-brilliant people) can see the bigger picture in life so clearly.

I also wrote you because “American Girl” is one of my favorite songs. I was on a huge Tom Petty kick a while back.

So what do you like to do around the city?

Googling was a coward’s approach. I don’t entirely blame him for not writing back. But I don’t entirely blame myself for not playing the game, either. Admittedly, I would think it was more clever and less of a game if he had written me back. (Hey, I might be irrational, but at least I’m self-aware.)

Email #6: The hot photographer

Posted in 100 emails, dating, me, online dating at 6:36 pm by N

I need to step up my whole involvement in this Match thing if I want it to pay off (literally and figuratively). So I decided to stop winking at people and start emailing.

This guy was hot. Let’s be honest. Great, endearingly toothy smile, tousled hair, 5′11″ (perfect height). Although, now that I reread his profile, he’s probably looking for someone more outdoorsy than me. Still, this is what I found appealing about him:

  • He sounds way into his hobbies: hiking, travel (yes, that’s a hobby), slacklining (he defined it, thankfully)
  • He believes in love at first sight. (I don’t know that I trust love at first sight anymore, but you have to love a guy who’s a romantic.)
  • He had a great, laid-back, casual tone to his writing that made me think that he’d be laid-back.
  • His photographs were amazing. Really and truly amazing.

Here’s what I wrote him:

I have to say, I liked the headline of your profile, but your photos really drew me in. Such great lighting! I love the drama in them. Photography is something I’ve always wanted to be better at, but there are so many other things to try first. The best I’ve ever done is capturing a trickle of rain runoff on Ayer’s Rock (Uluru) in Australia, as the sun was coming up. Even though I managed to get the tiniest spot of chap stick on the lens, it’s still one of my favorite pictures.

Anyway, you seemed really intriguing. I like intriguing people. Would you be up for coffee sometime?

Nicole

No response. That’s cool. That’s what this whole experiment is about, right?

Guys’ turn-offs and when to give up | Bros Roundtable Podcast

Posted in Bros Roundtable, dating, podcast at 11:24 pm by N

In the second episode of the Bros Roundtable, the bros talk about the right answer to “how many guys have you slept with?”, turn-offs, when they hate PDA, and the difference between beer breath and bad breath. Also, one of the newest additions goes off about having to talk to his ex when they were living together.

The bros:

  • Sterling Matthews, big banker
  • Ray Huff, motorcross champion
  • McBroerson, artist extraordinaire
  • Gary Supermacho, works on cars
  • Rambro Skeeter [no known profession]

Coming up in the next two (or maybe three) BRTs: The bros discuss international affairs and continue the talk on when to give up and when to give someone another chance, including the tell-tale sign that although a guy is canceling plans, he’s still interested in you.

Bros Roundtable Preview

Posted in dating at 10:14 pm by N

There are a couple of things that I’m learning about recording the Bros Roundtable:

  • Guys like it when you feed them and serve them beer.
  • Someone is going to show up drunk. (It’ll be a fun game for all the listeners to try to figure out who it is.)
  • When guys get too uncomfortable about talking about their emotions, just show them an episode of Teen Girl Squad and they’ll feel more comfortable.
  • McBroerson, a new addition to the BRT, is bitter about his ex-girlfriend.

Actually that’s about it. But here’s a preview to the next two (yeah, we got enough for two podcasts!) podcasts:

  • There’s a difference between beer breath and bad breath.
  • Guys freak out at the beginning of relationships too. Unless you’re a motorcross champ. Then apparently you never freak out.
  • Chow’s lasagna bolognese is a hit with the bros.
  • If a guy blows you off but is still interested, he’ll do a certain thing to let you know that you shouldn’t give up.

I’m going to try to edit it over the weekend and post them in two segments over two weeks.

When to Give Another Chance, When to Give Up

Posted in dating tagged at 8:24 am by N

We’re recording the next Bros Roundtable podcast on Thursday. Inspired by some recent events in Sterling’s and my personal lives, the theme is going to be giving up on someone versus giving them another chance.

I have the questions that you all suggested earlier, but if there’s anything you want to know about this specific topic, send me an email or leave it in the comments!

Love through literature, courtesy of the School of Life

Posted in book review, dating at 6:47 pm by N

I found out about London’s School of Life through work, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. I am dying to go there and take the Love course (as well as nearly every other class they offer).

In addition to the classes, the School offers bibliotherapy, which is designed to help one work through life’s issues by being exposed to brilliant books. On their blog earlier this week, they consulted their bibliotherapists for “Read your way out of a Valentine’s crisis,” to help people in all sorts of romantic (and unromantic) situations.
